Comparative Literature Program
The Comparative Literature department at Williams College offers a comprehensive and inclusive curriculum designed to foster interdisciplinary dialogue across cultures. Our courses delve into diverse literary traditions, historical periods, and cultural contexts from around the globe, allowing students to explore the universality of experience through comparative perspectives.
Our program includes core courses that provide foundational knowledge in literary theory and comparative analysis, alongside specialized seminars that focus on specific themes such as ger studies, postcolonialism, or the history of ideas. We collaborate with other departments across the university to enrich our offerings and expose students to various methodologies from fields like anthropology, art history, philosophy, and more.
Graduating majors have the opportunity to undertake an indepent senior thesis under the guidance of a faculty advisor, which often leads to a deeper exploration of specific research interests within comparative literature. Faculty members are leaders in their fields, contributing to international academic conversations through their scholarship on topics ranging from medieval literature to contemporary film theory.
For students interested in taking courses outside our major requirements, we provide a wide array of options taught by experts across the university who specialize in world literature and culture. This includes linguistics, history, anthropology, philosophy, art history, and cinema studies, among others.
To get personalized advice on fulfilling specific course requirements for your major or to plan ahead with your academic advisor during registration periods, we recomm consulting directly with our department chr or the program advisor.
You can find a complete list of current courses offered each semester and upcoming offerings by expanding the course catalog section at the bottom of this page.
