In the context of low utilization rates of female condoms across Sub-Saharan Africa, programs have typically positioned them as instruments for women's empowerment. Nonetheless, prevling ger dynamics often assign sexual decision-making responsibilities to men, implying that male orsement is pivotal for enhancing their usage. This study med to explore perceptions and experiences related to female condoms among men from Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and Cameroon, based on data collected in 2011.
Upon examination of the data, it was discovered that the perceived benefits of female condoms over other contraceptive methods included heightened pleasure, efficacy, and a lack of side effects. Men ted to favor using female condoms with stable partners rather than casual ones, and they viewed them predominantly as a contraceptive tool rather than just for protection agnst infections.
In Cameroon and Nigeria, where lower contraceptive rates are observed compared to Zimbabwe, men showed a higher inclination towards utilizing female condoms as a method for contraception alone. In contrast, in highly DS-affected Zimbabwe, male acceptance of using female condoms primarily for HIV prevention purposes was significantly greater. Notably, some men from Cameroon reported regular use of female condoms even during casual encounters.
Furthermore, the study revealed that initiation of female condom usage by stable partners among men was not met with approval in any of these countries.
This analysis underscores the significance of considering local contexts and targeting both men and women alike in initiatives promoting the widespread adoption of female condoms.
